The Cortex — neon arcade interior

Inside The Cortex

Cranial One exists inside a vast neon arcade called The Cortex — a labyrinth of pulsing circuits and glowing game cabinets stacked twenty storeys high. Every game here is a test of nerve and timing, not luck alone.

The cabinets are tended by Axon, the studio's sharp-witted robot mascot, who keeps the circuits humming and the coin counters honest. No one leaves The Cortex without feeling a little sharper than when they arrived.

The coins are virtual, the thinking is real. Step through the door and find your game.

Our Games

Four machines on the floor of The Cortex. Each one plays differently. All of them free.

Your balance: 50,000 Circuit Coins
Cortex Reels slot machine game SLOTS

Cortex Reels

Three reels of neon circuit symbols. Line them up and watch the cabinet light up.

Cortex Reels is the flagship cabinet on the ground floor of The Cortex. The reels carry five symbols pulled straight from the arcade's circuitry — chips, bolts, and the ever-reliable Axon Wild. A round feels like flipping a logic gate: quick, clean, and satisfying when all three line up.

Each spin costs your chosen bet in Circuit Coins. Match three identical symbols across the centre payline and you collect a win between 2× and 50× your stake. The Axon Wild substitutes for any symbol — land three Axon Wilds and you hit the top prize. Hit Spin and let the cabinet decide.

Currency: Circuit Coins Top win: 500 CC
BET
10
Win up to: 500 CC
Rules
  • Match 3 identical symbols across the centre row to win.
  • The Axon symbol is wild and substitutes for any other symbol.
  • Landing 3 Axon wilds pays the top prize.
  • All wins are paid in virtual Circuit Coins only and have no real-money value whatsoever.
Neuron Drop plinko game PLINKO

Neuron Drop

Drop a charge through the neural peg grid and see which synapse it fires into.

Neuron Drop maps the plinko mechanic onto The Cortex's neural network aesthetic. Synaptic nodes glow as the charge passes through them, and the bottom row of collector slots pulses with multiplier values. It's the most visually meditative game in the arcade — one ball, seven rows, seven possible landings.

Each drop costs your chosen bet. The charge falls through seven rows of glowing nodes, deflecting left or right at each. The slot it lands in carries a multiplier — outer slots pay 25×, inner slots pay as low as 0.5×. Your payout is bet × multiplier. High risk, high reward out on the edges.

Currency: Circuit Coins Top: 25× bet
BET
15
Win up to: 3,750 CC
Rules
  • Release a charge from the top of the grid and let it cascade through the synaptic nodes.
  • The slot it lands on at the bottom determines your multiplier.
  • Outer slots carry higher multipliers; the centre slot is the safe zone.
  • All prizes are paid in virtual Circuit Coins only and have no real-money value.
Frequency Wheel spin game WHEEL

Frequency Wheel

Spin the broadcast dial and land on a winning frequency. Axon reads the signal.

The Frequency Wheel sits in a broadcast booth on the fifteenth floor of The Cortex, styled as a retro radio dial with eight segments. Each one is tuned to a different multiplier — or dead air. Axon announces every result with characteristic dry humour. Land on x10 and even he sounds impressed.

Each spin costs your chosen bet. The dial rotates for three to four seconds and settles on one of eight segments. Multipliers range from 1× to 10× your stake; two segments are Static, meaning no win that round. Your payout is bet × segment multiplier. Spin the dial and read the signal.

Currency: Circuit Coins Top: 10× bet
BET
10
Win up to: 800 CC
Rules
  • Spin the Frequency Wheel and watch the pointer settle on a segment.
  • Each segment shows a coin multiplier — the pointer decides your payout.
  • A 'Static' segment means no win this round — try again.
  • All payouts are in virtual Circuit Coins only and carry no real-money value.
Logic Match memory tile game MEMORY

Logic Match

Flip the circuit tiles and match the pairs. Axon times every move.

Logic Match brings a memory-game cabinet to The Cortex's top floor. Twelve tiles face down on a glowing circuit board, each concealing one of six paired icons from the arcade's visual vocabulary. Axon watches with a stopwatch — every matched pair earns you Circuit Coins, and a clean board earns a bonus.

Each round costs your chosen bet. Flip two tiles per turn: a match banks 30 Circuit Coins scaled to your bet and keeps both tiles open; a mismatch flips them back face-down after a short pause. Clear all six pairs for a completion bonus on top. The fewer turns it takes, the sharper Axon thinks you are.

Currency: Circuit Coins 30 CC per match

Win up to: 180 CC + bonus
Flip two tiles to begin
Rules
  • Flip two tiles per turn — if they match, you keep them and bank the coins.
  • Clear the whole board to earn a completion bonus.
  • Unmatched tiles flip back face-down, so pay attention.
  • All coin rewards are virtual only and have no real-money value.

How Free Play Works

Circuit Coins keep the machines running. Here is exactly how the economy of The Cortex operates.

Starting Balance

Every visitor who steps into The Cortex is handed a fresh stash of 50,000 Circuit Coins — no card required, no sign-up, no catch. Axon loads the tray as soon as you open the page.

Zero Risk

Circuit Coins are virtual tokens that exist only inside The Cortex. They cannot be purchased, withdrawn, or exchanged for anything of real-world value. There is no money here — only play.

Refilling

Run the tray dry? Pull the pressure-release valve — refresh the page and Axon restocks you with a full 50,000 Circuit Coins, no questions asked. The Cortex never closes, and you're always welcome back in.

Our Story

"Casino-style games are more fun when they reward sharp thinking as well as good timing."

Cranial One was prototyped in a shared workspace in Bristol in 2021 by a small team with a straightforward idea. We came from puzzle games and indie development, not from gambling — and that shows in how we build. Every mechanic went through rounds of play-testing before a single line of production code was written.

We have never run a real-money game, never asked a player for a card number, and never will. The Cortex is ours, the coins are virtual, and the whole thing exists to give you a good ten minutes.

Studio Team

The people who keep the cabinets lit and the circuits honest.

PN
Priya Nair
Studio Director

Priya spent six years at an indie puzzle-game studio before co-founding Cranial One in 2021. She believes the best games make you feel clever, not lucky.

TW
Tomasz Wierzbicki
Head of Game Design

Tomasz came to digital games from competitive chess and logic puzzle competitions. He designs every mechanic from the player's decision point outward, not from the math inward.

AD
Amara Diallo
Art Director

Amara built the visual language of The Cortex from scratch — every glow, every neon colour stop, and Axon's dome-headed silhouette all started in her sketchbook.

OC
Oliver Crane
Lead Front-End Engineer

Oliver writes the game engines that run entirely in the browser with no installs. His rule: if it lags on a mid-range Android, it ships as not done yet.

YA
Yemi Adeyemi
Community & Responsible Play Lead

Yemi moderates the player community and writes every responsible-play communication. She is the first person to read any complaint and the last to close it.

06

Responsible Play

Cranial One is built for adults in the United Kingdom who want a sharp, entertaining experience — not a financial one. Every game on this site, from Cortex Reels to Logic Match, is free to play and always will be. The Cortex is an 18+ environment; if you're not yet 18, this arcade isn't yours yet.

Circuit Coins are the only currency inside The Cortex. They have no monetary value, cannot be exchanged for prizes or cash, and cannot be purchased. Even so, Axon and the whole studio take responsible play seriously — because entertainment that stops feeling enjoyable is no longer entertainment. The same habits that matter in real-money gaming matter here too.

If playing ever stops feeling like a good time — if it starts crowding out other parts of your day — it's worth stepping back. Professional support services are available in the United Kingdom, and our Responsible Play page has the full details, including a free helpline. No pressure, no hurry. The Cortex will still be here.

The Cortex is the in-universe name for the neon arcade world that Cranial One games are set in. It's a bit of lore that gives the games their shared look and feel — Axon the robot is its host. No gameplay effect, just atmosphere.
